Top 10 Fitness Apps

Technology is always advancing and shifting the way we do things. With the introduction of the Smart Phone, app developers have had the opportunity to introduce many types of fitness applications and wearable fitness trackers. Technologies ranging from pedometers to meal trackers, to weightlifting, there are a plethora of great apps that can help streamline and focus your workout session. Here are our top picks for health apps and devices that are sure to make your next workout KILLER!

Pedometers

Moves – This is a location aware activity monitor that detects if you’re walking, running, cycling or driving. You are able to see where your activity occurred, how long it lasted, average speed and approximate calories burned based on height, weight and intensity level of the activity. This is a must have for anyone trying to stay abreast of their physical exertion as well as an excellent complement to other pedometers such as the Fitbit.

Fitbit – This is the device that popularized the idea of having a wearable piece of tech that keeps track of your movement, plus other bits of data. The Fitbit now comes many types of models, with the most popular being the Charge and Charge+. All their wearables connect to the FitBit App on the user’s phone. The app is available on both iOS and Android and has an array of various settings to customize the FitBit.

Apple Watch – Easily the most expensive of all the wearables, but, definitely, the most feature filled. The Apple Watch isn’t solely a fitness tracker, since it has so many other main utilities. But the reason it’s on this list is because on top of tracking steps, it keeps track of your calories, how much you’re standing throughout the day, and has a variety of pre-programmed exercises to pick from when starting your workout, to keep more accurate account of your workout. Plus, it’s sync feature with the iPhone makes it even more seamless to integrate with other apps in the Apple App Store.

Diet Trackers & Food Logs:

Lose It! – With this handy food, weight and workout tracker, you can consolidate your workout journal and your food diary in one convenient app. Or, if you’ve been meaning to start logging those things, this is a terrific tool to get you up and running. One downside of this app is an absence of barcode scanning capabilities but, on a positive note, the food library is extensive, including both popular name brands as well generic category headings like “fruit” and “beef”. Fit Republic App – This is the official app of Fit Republic. It works great in tandem with other apps like FitBit, Nike Running, and quite a few more. Plus, you can use it to check into the gym.

Yoga

Airplane Yoga – We live in a day and age when air travel and slumber parties have essentially the same dress code. The only difference is that it might not be permissible to bring your service dog with you to a slumber party. But here’s the silver lining: now you can do yoga in the airport without anyone looking askance at you. Airplane Yoga is only a dollar and it will guide you through stretches, poses and meditation techniques while you’re waiting to catch that puddle jumper to Poughkeepsie. Includes videos to demonstrate the poses and exercises.

Down Dog – A free app with plenty to offer. Perfect for beginners with plenty of starting positions. The only downside is that it doesn’t have enough for advance yoga participants. There is a monthly subscription which has a plethora of more advanced features, but for a free app, it is great.
